The Northland CORE used book and curriculum sale is in the process of being organized.
Corri Runquist is organizing it, to be held at Hermantown Community Chruch on Saturday, April 21, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
A 4x4 table will be $10; 8-foot tables are $15. This money goes to the church for the use of their space. Coffee and treats will be available. It should be a fun day!

There is a new venture in the area whose mission is to support homeschoolers with teaching assistance for elementary and junior high science. The teacher has an extensive background in outdoor education, a WI teaching license for general and life science, and is finishing her Master's Degree in Education at UMD. Experts' Night 2012

  Northland CORE will host Experts’ Night on the evening of Friday, March 30, 2012.
  Families will get together and give their students a chance to shine. Experts’ Night is like a science fair, but projects can be about anything. Each project should include a visual display (such as a tri-fold poster board), report and hands-on activity (such as a coloring page, quiz, food sample or science experiment). The level of difficulty and amount of help the students get is entirely up to the homeschooling parents.

  The event will be at Hartley Nature Center, 3001 Woodland Ave., Duluth, Minn., at 6 p.m. Arrive anytime from 6-7 p.m., when students will set up their displays and get the chance to walk around to see other displays and talk with other students. From 7-8 p.m., each participant should be at his or her table while families and other guests view their displays. There will be a comments sheet on each table so the students can get positive feedback about their project. Participants are free to leave early if the evening gets too late for little ones.
  There is no judging, and each participant gets a ribbon. The event is open to all Northland homeschoolers, including those who are not members of Northland CORE. Thanks to a generous discount from Hartley Nature Center, we'll be able to provide this fun evening at no cost to participants.

Homeschool band starting -- deadline is SOON

Hello!

     My name is Janna Blomquist and I don't know why it has taken me so long to think of this!! I am a private music teacher in Duluth. I teach both band instruments and piano, having been a band director for over 25 years. When my family moved here to Duluth in 2006, I taught band at Holy Rosary until 2009 when I went into private teaching full-time. I organize area middle school festivals for band students with fellow director Jenna Udenberg from Two Harbors and they are open to both public and private teachers.

     The reason I am writing you is because I have also become associated with the Northland Youth Music Program and its director, Bob Greenberg. In addition to providing exciting annual summer music camps in Superior, WI, he and I are trying to begin a Winter Concert Band program called "Winter Winds". It is a 16-week program that meets on Monday nights from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the alternating locations of Proctor HS. and Superior HS. It will culminate with a concert in May following our last rehearsal on the 7th. This concert band is appropriate for students that are playing at an intermediate level on their instruments. One of the best students I have in my studio is a flute player by the name of Meghan Boster. This is the Boster family's first year of home-schooling and she misses playing in her school band! It is for students like Meghan that we are trying this program. We have been advertising since October in all the music stores and schools and in the press and radio. Unfortunately, we have only gotten a handful of responses and we need at least a dozen more by Friday as the scheduled start date is Monday, the 9th! Kari Boster gave me your contact information and we are hoping you can help, possibly by posting on the Northland Core blog. I am kicking myself for not thinking of this sooner!

CORE Board wants you!

Hello homeschool community!
I hope that you all are off to a great start for this school year. It has been great to see many of you out and about at various homeschool events over the past couple of weeks. Speaking of events it is time to start thinking about what kinds of things we'd like to organize for the rest of the year. My goal for the year as the new CORE coordinator is to bring our community together even more than we already are. I want to have Northland CORE organize many more events for our community's homeschool families and give us all plenty of opportunities to get to know one another, and to just get out and have some fun!
In order to meet these goals we need your help! We need more homeschooling parents to serve on the CORE board to help come up with new ideas for the year, as well as parents who would be willing to take the reigns and plan an activity that would be open to the homeschool community at large. (You do not need to serve on the board to plan an activity, so you would not necessarily need to commit to anything long term.)
We are also looking for kids who would be interested on serving on an all new CORE Kids Advisory Board. This is the thing that I am most excited about this year! I am still working out details, but my hope is that we can put together this Kids Advisory Board to give our kids a chance to tell us what events they'd like to see happen, to help plan those events, and to write for the CORE newsletter, among other things.
The meeting will be 7 p.m. in the Barnes and Noble coffee shop.

EDITED: The CORE board meeting has been rescheduled for October 12th at 7 PM. We will still be meeting at Barnes & Noble.

If you have a child or children interested in serving on the Northland CORE Kid's Advisory Board please email me! I will be setting up a first meeting for the kid's board once I find out how many kids are interested in participating.

Enjoy three hours of unlimited rides on Spirit Mountain's Timber Twister alpine roller coaster AND the new zip line! Snack bar is available, selling hot dogs and pizza.
The Timber Twister is a secure roller coaster connected to the track. Each car has brakes to slow the car, but you can ride the whole way with no brakes and still feel safe while having a great ride. Riders ages 3-7 must ride with another person age 16 or older. Riders 8 and older AND 48 inches and taller may ride alone. The same rules apply for the zip line, which just opened this fall.
Rates are $12 per student, $15 for adults.
We hope you can make this a fun back-to-school activity. Rides normally are $8 each trip down, so it's a great deal to get this school rate. We'll need 40 students, so RSVP to Beverly, 724-8752 or beverlyduluth (at) aol.com.

Hello Families,

My name is Jennifer Derrick and I will be available for tutoring beginning this fall (some afternoons and occasional Saturday hours). My specialty is writing –any age, and all styles and types. I am a former University of Minnesota Duluth writing instructor, a homeschooling parent, and a freelance writer. Qualifications include a Bachelor of English, a Master of English Studies, familiarity with a variety of ages, and teaching experience.

In all likelihood, tutoring will be held at the Duluth Public Library or the UMD library. Rates are $25 per hour. If you are a parent with two children in need of tutoring, I will be glad to tutor them both for $30 per hour (as long as this is something we discuss ahead of time, and as long as it is a good working situation for both children). Operation Conservation: Our focus for 2011 is “Solar Matters.”
We will be taking a Voyage from the Sun, an interactive series of classes that teaches students about the adaptations that allow plants and animals to use and conserve energy. Hartley Nature Center homeschool classes

Hartley Nature Center offers once-monthly programming for homeschooled youth ages 4 through 15. The popular homeschool classes are available in a morning (9-11 a.m.) session or an afternoon (1-3 p.m.) session. Families register for an entire year (9 sessions) of programming. The cost for the 2011-12 school year is $90/HNC members and $135/non-members. Classes are divided into Preschool Porcupines (ages 4&5), Ramblin' Raccoons (ages 6&7), Bushwhackers (ages 8&9), and Nature Scientists (ages 10-12), and Hartley Stewards (ages 13-15).

Our homeschool class is back to once a month but there is still just as much art as before! All of the projects will be new, with connections made to all aspects of the curriculum, literature, science, social studies and more. Visual art is the earliest form of expression and communication. Come explore art through the ages and from around the world. Investigate the historical context and purpose of art objects from different cultures and eras, and gain insight into what self-expression meant to them. Then become a part of art history yourself, as you create art projects inspired by what has been created in the past. Learn about the elements and principles of design – the building blocks of every artwork. Students will use a variety of materials, such as clay, plaster, charcoal, watercolor paint, and much more. Classes will begin with a presentation in our computer lab, followed by group research, personal sketching, and art production. Some writing in the form of reflections will be encouraged. Study guides and more research opportunities will be provided for parents to further the process throughout the month with their children. A morning snack will be provided.

Any interest in a homeschool volleyball team?

Do you want to join a group of like-minded young adults and play?

Do you like Volleyball??

I'd like to put out a request to all of you young adults and see if we can get a couple of teams together for some team-on-team, competetive fun.
See, my daughter is 16 and for the first time ever (much to my anxiety) she went to Denfeld Highschool Volleyball tryouts this week. Well, there were over 60 entrants to 30 positions and needless to say, she wasn't one of "last year's" champs to make it on the team. She was crushed (I was guiltily releaved). Well, I had told her if she didn't make the cut maybe we could put out a 'feeler' and see if there's the same desire in other homeschooled kids.

Our hope is to create two, 5-7 person teams to play against --but together.
Boys AND Girls welcome.
We would meet at Memorial Community Center on Grand Ave. in west Duluth for the first few meets. Park Point will be "safe" (meaning no bikinis) when the public schools and colleges open again, so we could meet there, also.
Meets could be on a chosen weekday (I like Tuesdays but let me know) from 1pm-2:30/3:00pm. At Memorial Community Center there are playgrounds and swings so entire families would be invited. :) (for me, that's a bonus as we have seven children; five are ages 9 & under)

Committed players, please.
Basic knowledge of Volleyball rules would really be helpful, so do some research ;)

As time goes on & the weather turns cooler, we'd like to be able to use a church building's V-Ball court. Salem Lutheran Church in west Duluth has a court as does the Christian Missionary Alliance Church on Banks Ave. in Superior, Wisconsin. If any of you fellow parents knows of another building we could have meets at, suggestions are most certainly welcome! We would have to decide on a fee at that point, to compensate the use of the building.

Deadline: September 16th. That way we could know what to expect/plan for.

Homeschool choir will begin this fall

Homeschoolers of the Twin Ports community,
Your homeschool choir will begin this Fall! You’ve got the word out, and many families (totaling more than 30 students) have replied indicating their interest. I expect a few more may trickle in at the beginning of the school year as well. I’m absolutely ecstatic about this kind of response!
God has provided a location for us to meet in! Mount Olive Lutheran Church, pastored by Rob Franck, a homeschooling father, has graciously allowed us to meet in their facility. Mount Olive Lutheran Church is located at 2012 E Superior St. in Duluth.
Rehearsal times will be on Wednesday afternoons, from 4-5 p.m. We will meet weekly throughout the year, and our first performance will take place early during the Christmas season! The choir will be geared towards students 10 years old to 12th grade. If you have a younger student who’s interested, I suggest bringing them to find out if they can comfortably participate.
In the next couple of days, I’ll send a registration form detailing expectations for myself, the students and the choir. Our first meeting will be on Wednesday, September 7th. You can bring registration forms by that week. And if you need a week or two to think it over, drop it off by the second or third week. This is an important commitment for everyone involved, and I’m sure you’d like to get to know me and fellow choir members before making a final decision. Or you might be ready and raring to go like I am!
I would also like to gauge interest in a children’s choir that would meet from 3:30-4:00 on Wednesdays before the regular choir. This would before for students 12 years old and below. I know there are several families who have students that are right around this age and might benefit from a younger choir. I would encourage students who can to also participate in the older choir.

  Basically, it reduces the reporting requirements without giving up the state aid money homeschoolers can get for books. E-books are now included, too.

In the Twin Ports Northland CORE volunteers work to make our homeschool community just that much stronger, and provides opportunities to bring homeschool families together.
  We want to make Northland CORE better than ever, but to do that we need all of you. We are looking for a couple of things. One, and maybe most importantly, we need some fantastic volunteers to serve on our board and to help with events and activities in the upcoming year. If you are passionate about homeschooling and want to see the Twin Ports homeschool community grow and thrive please contact me about volunteering with CORE!

Local educator starting homeschool choir

My name is Matt Wheeler. I’m a second year Masters student attending UMD, working towards my masters in music degree. I’m originally from Cedar Rapids, IA, where I attended college, and before that, was homeschooled for twelve years. In the fall, I’m going to be starting a choir for homeschoolers in the Twin Ports area, and am looking to get the word out.
The Twin Ports Homeschool Choir will be open to any homeschooler in 6th grade to 12th grade from the greater Twin Ports area. Younger siblings are welcome to participate, as long as they have word reading/comprehension and can be an active participant for an hour. The repertoire will be mostly sacred, with a few fun songs and maybe classical works as well. The choir will meet once a week on an afternoon (likely Wednesday) from September through mid-May, and there will be two concerts – one Christmas concert and one Spring concert. There will be a small fee of $25 for the year per student, to cover music, folder and venue costs.
My goal in starting this choir is to use my talents and time to contribute to the local homeschool (and greater) community. My homeschool experience is an integral part of who I am today, and the homeschool choir that I participated in is a large part of that. The creation of beautiful music as a choir brings families together and gives both the students and the community a sense of pride and accomplishment, and also glorifies our Lord!
If the choir is something that you’d be interested in having your students participate in, simply reply to me: matt@mattwheelerstudios.com. It’s not a commitment, just an ‘I’m interested’. If there are other families you know that might be interested, feel free to forward this message to them, or send me their email (so they don’t get bombarded from multiple people). Prairie Fire specializes in touring original adaptations of classic children’s tales. The theater group consists of two professional actors/teachers who instruct and mentor the children in all of the steps necessary to produce a play in a one week camp. Rotary International is committed to the development of leaders – not just for the future, but today as well. The first RYLA was held in July 1961 in Brisbane, Australia. In Minnesota, from Fergus Falls to Thunder Bay, our RYLA program is a six day camp held on the campus of the University of Minnesota, Crookston. The Rotary group I belong to is the ECO Rotary group. We would like to send one student and preferably a home-schooled student to this camp. My Eco Rotary group is made up of 55 community leaders with an emphasis on service. We are committed to service in our communities, and one of the ways we do that is through the support of the RYLA Program. We will pay the room and board fees as well as the transportation fees. The bus is driven by a hired professional driver and assumes the liability for this transport.

We’ve expanded our homeschool class to every other week to expand the art opportunities for you and your children! All of the projects will be new, with connections made to all aspects of the curriculum, literature, science, social studies and more. Visual art is the earliest form of expression and communication. Come explore art through the ages and from around the world. Investigate the historical context and purpose of art objects from different cultures and eras, and gain insight into what self-expression meant to them. Then become a part of art history yourself, as you create art projects inspired by what has been created in the past. Students will use a variety of materials, such as clay, plaster, charcoal, watercolor paint, and much more. Learn about line, shape, color, texture, unity, rhythm…the elements and principles of design. Classes will begin with a presentation in our computer lab, followed by group research, personal sketching, and art production. Some writing in the form of reflections will be encouraged. Recently I and some partners launched a new business called Learning Encounters. Our mission is to provide affordable high-quality science education products to the world - instilling a love of learning and encouraging scientific exploration. Our web site, www.leosciencelab.com , is not just an e-commerce site it is a learning destination and a hub for a science loving community. We have posted experiments to down load, blogs to participate in, a Facebook page (2600+ followers) to share cool science related items on, a hall of scientists to learn more about famous scientists, and a cool augmented reality experience.

Our products provide real experiential learning opportunities from learning how a telescope works by building it, to exploring the microscopic world around us with a digital microscope. We encourage people to share their experiences by posting photos and videos of their discoveries ( the Digital Microscopes have 1.3 mega pixel still cameras and can capture video as well). While we call them Toys the telescopes you build are real working telescopes that provide views equivalent to telescopes that cost hundreds of dollars.

Digital Art Workshop

The Digital Methods in Art Education class and professor Betsy Hunt are gearing up for the second year of the Digital Art Workshop for youth ages 11-14! This workshop focuses on animation techniques including Photoshop animation and stop motion animation using clay, sand, collage, and various other materials. Students will also work with digital cameras, edit video, and add original music tracks to their films.

Grades 2-8 Creation Science class students:
· Class #1 Thursday, Oct. 11th with 9:30 our start time
· Helpful items to bring: 3 ring binder, pencil, notebook or paper, small snack for break time.
· Parents are welcome to sit in on the class at any time.
· It helps to be there 10 to 15 minutes early, especially the first meeting to allow time to get signed in and pay fee (I will be collecting your checks for Mr. Nuckols).
· Fee for the class is $80 per student
· Materials fee is $11 per student, with a $25 cap of three or more in a family

This Science class with John and Dan Nuckols is scheduled to begin Monday, Oct. 11, from 9:30-11:45. This class meets the second Monday of each month through May and is appropriate for student’s 2nd-8th grade. The fee is $80 per student, with a materials fee of $11, with a cap of $25 for 3 or more in a family. Three of our children have been privileged to take part in these classes and we have the utmost respect for John and are looking forward to this year’s introduction to his teaming up with His son, Dan. John is an excellent teacher and really gets everyone in the class excited about science!

Our boys have really enjoyed Cub Scouts and the activities that they do. They have made a lot of friendships and learned many different skills. Some of the things they will enjoy this year is Pine Wood Derby, learning about citizenship, their flag and country, life skills, physical fitness and much more! My husband and I have been very involved in this group and homeschool our 4 kids. We can only find great things to say about this organization. Cub Scouts is for boys in 1st grade - 5th grade. Zoo homeschool series starts in September

  Homeschool Classes are offered at the Lake Superior Zoo for ages 7-12, this year with all ages meeting at the same time in the same class. This year's classes will explore conservation issues.

Music class for children 5-10

  Rachael Kresha is teaching a special music class for children ages 5-10. The class will meet from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. at Pilgrim Congregational Church on Thursday evenings beginning January 7 to May 6, with a close of semester concert likely on the afternoon of Mother's Day, May 9.
  The cost is $20 per family for the whole semester. Rachael is an excellent music teacher for children, and she has a lot of neat things planned for this semester.
  This class will incorporate movement, rhythmic instruments, games, and singing to teach children about music. It is based on Musikgarten, Kodaly, Dalcroze, and Orff, but adapted for our setting.
  In addition to singing, playing rhythmic instruments, bells, and creative movement, recorders and boomwhakers will be some of the instruments we are going to learn how to play! Because we have moved our class to Thursdays, Make a Joyful Noise will have a chance to use the chimes that the bell choir uses at well!
  Special guests have been lined up to demonstrate their instruments to our class, most notably, Dr. Greg Moore, professor at UWS will bring in his saxophone, and also Dr. Brett Jones, another professor at UWS will be coming to do a percussion demonstration. We are also going to spend a little time on the pipe organ. They will learn about the diversity of the instrument, what it looks like on the inside and out, and also get a chance to pull stops, and try out the console.

My many selfish reasons for helping Northland CORE

  As Northland CORE passes its tenth year of connecting homeschoolers, it also suffers burnout from some of its most active leaders. As I take on the position of coordinator, the entire board is focusing its efforts on getting more people involved in planning our events.
  I know homeschoolers tend to be lone wolves, and every board member of CORE shares traits of the lone wolf. We are responsible for our own families; we take care of our own. What benefit is it to my children, my family, if I take time away to help CORE? Glad you asked!
  My children have taken classes specifically for homeschoolers at theLake Superior Zoo, Duluth Art Institute and Hartley Nature Center. We go roller skating and bowling at the group rate. Other families go to Spirit Mountain, Snowflake Nordic skiing, the YMCA and Outdoor (ed)Ventures. Classes like this didn't exist 10 years ago! Keeping the homeschooling community in touch with each other will help businesses see that we're a community that wants their services.
  Experts' Night is a favorite family evening when our children get a chance to shine. This event inspires and excites children by letting them show their special project to a room full of people. They get a chance to demonstrate what they've done without the pressure of being judged. My kids talk about what they'll do for the next Experts' Night the same way they plan what to be for Halloween.
  CORE's used book sale is a great way to make some money and save some, and socialize at the same time. It can be hard to find buyers for used curriculum at a normal garage sale, and you can find some bargains, too!
  CORE maintains a list of support groups in the area, so families can find contact names of friends, support and time out of the house.
  Whether it's at a conference, Parents' Night Out or other event, workshops coordinated by Northland CORE provide continuing education for parents, and a chance to simply get out of the house and use your brain. The break can be invigorating, and maybe your kids will notice when you return to them refreshed!
  If these reasons aren't enough for us to get more volunteers for CORE, let me add that hanging out with the board members is really fun. We have meetings at Barnes & Noble, where we buy fancy coffees and end up getting home later than planned. Our children help out, learning what it takes to plan events and be good hosts. We learn from each other, too. I am more enlightened and confident in my job as a homeschooling mother because of my associated with Northland CORE.

Preschool group seeks moms' helper

  I am a mom involved in a home schooled group of preschoolers (Namaste Kids). We meet once a week for 2.5 hours and are looking for an older home schooled child who would be able to help us with our transitions (ie: large motor to small motor), watching younger siblings, helping with craft time, etc.
  There are 7 kids (plus 6 younger siblings). Moms are present the entire time, but having extra hands while one mom nurses, changes a diaper, deals with an owie, etc., would be helpful!

The Duluth Figure Skating Club and Duluth Amateur Hockey Association are offering new options for lessons, including daytime spots for homeschoolers.
Pre-School & Homeschool Skating Classes:
Thursday, Oct. 29 to Dec. 17, 1-2 p.m. Heritage Arena (Wednesday, Nov. 25 because of Thanksgiving). Cost is $85.
Additional classes will be scheduled for January to March. Information will be posted on Duluth Amateur Hockey Association, City of Duluth & Duluth Figure Skating Club websites
Skaters will be learning skating skills through the U.S. Figure Skating Basic Skills Program. This program is for ages 3-5 for the preschool class & students who are homeschooled. Classes will be divided according to age and ability with a 30 min class & 30 min for practice. Specific lesson time will be determined after registration. Safety helmets are suggested for beginning skaters and skaters must provide their own skates. Parents/caregivers can skate along with their preschoolers for an additional fee of $15.

Sacred Heart Music Center to host free educational performances

  Sacred Heart Music Center is starting a new education performance series starting Thursday, Oct. 15 at 9:30 a.m. at the center, 201 W. Fourth St., Duluth. It will feature the Gitchigami Trio (violin, cello and piano) and include a brief solo presentation followed by the trio and a Q&A session.
  This will be the first of a youth music and education program throughout the school year. Homeschool families are welcome to participate. The programs are free and typically last one hour, starting at 9:30 a.m. on Thursdays. The goal is to connect kids with the arts by having performances with an educational component.

What: A hybrid system of academics

When: starts right away, and you can jump in anytime there is space.
What we will do: So here's the deal, we knew we wanted to home school. Yet, there was some key elements that we didn't have the money or ability to give our kids (ie. music, art, foreign language) So, we decided to do the online school thing for academics. Then we enrolled them in our local school for band, art and gym. Things have been working out great, except I am discovering that I am having to spend more time facilitating the "self-directed" online school than expected. So I am just going to teach them myself. No problem. SOOOOO, I figured since I am doing it already with my two boys, why not invite other boys into the mix. Here's the schedule and what we are going to offer:
7:30 a.m.-9 a.m. Feel free to show up anytime, our lower level family area will be all set up with a self-serve breakfast area (with only healthy foods of course!!) and tables with games for facilitating great community dynamics. (I don't really consider video games part of that - sorry guys - I don't like them!) So, things like chess, monopoly, yahtzee, etc.
9-9:45 Session 1, then a 15 minute break
10-10:45 Session 2, then a 15 minute break
11-11:45 Session 3
11:45-12:45 p.m. Lunch
12:45 Leave for Morgan Park if you want to be part of the 6th grade band, art ,gym
3:15 arrive back at house from the bus, or the bus will go to your house
3:15-5 p.m. hang out, snack, wait for parents.- do any homework if needed
Monday: Math, Science, Spanish (day A)
Tuesday: Language, Social, TBA (maybe a Bible course) (day B)

Marie Monreal is a native Duluthian who after graduating with a Spanish degree (previously pre-med) moved to Monterey Mexico to work at a YWAM base (youth with a mission). She taught at the discipleship school, and led missions teams throughout the city. She also used her fluent Spanish skills to translate in numerous venues. She married a fabulous man from Monterey and moved back to Duluth three years ago. They have two wonderful boys, ages 5 and 3.

Homeschool teen nights to begin

  Parents are starting off monthly gatherings for homeschooled teens with an outdoor event while the weather is cooperative.
  TEEN NIGHT ~ FRIDAY, SEPT. 25 ~ 6-8:30 p.m.
  All homeschool teens (13 years old and older) are invited to a teen night, hosted by the Meiers at Grant Rec. Park. We will meet from 6-8 p.m. at the park to play soccer. From 8-8:30 you are welcome to come back to our house for snacks. The park is located at 9th Ave. E. and 11th St. and our home is one block away.
  Please bring snacks/drinks to share.
  Feel free to drop your snacks off at the house and then head up to the park. As you drive up 9th Ave. from 9th St. our house is on your right - 928 9th Ave. E.

Folk dancing starts this Friday

  This year we will be doing folk dancing every quarter with the Harbor City String Band.
  The first one for the season is this Friday, October 2, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at Harbor City International School.

  We moved it a little later this year hoping to get more dads involved....dancing or playing music is terrific!!
  I can't tell you what a great physical/social activity this is for you and your kids. And no matter how I feel before I get there I always end up doing a lot of smiling and a lot of laughing!
  If you come please bring a snack to share afterwards. Adults and kids have a lot to say to each other and a snack always makes it better.
  The event is free, though donations will be accepted to pay our instructor. Convenient parking is available in the paid lot on Michigan Street.

Sign up for one semester or both….all of the projects will be new, with connections made to all aspects of the curriculum, literature, science, social studies and more. Visual art is the earliest form of expression and communication. Come explore art through the ages and from around the world. Investigate the historical context and purpose of art objects from different cultures and eras, and gain insight into what self-expression meant to them. Then become a part of art history yourself, as you create art projects inspired by what has been created in the past. Students will use a variety of materials, such as clay, plaster, charcoal, watercolor paint, and much more. Classes will begin with a presentation in our computer lab, followed by group research, personal sketching, and art production. Some writing in the form of reflections will be encouraged. Study guides and more research opportunities will be provided for parents to further the process throughout the month with their children. A morning snack will be provided.

Piano lessons

As the fall semester approaches and parents are planning curriculum/activities for their children, I wanted to let homeschoolers know about openings I have in my piano studio. I am an Adjunct Piano Professor at the College of St. Scholastica and the University of MN-Duluth, as well as a private piano instructor to students of all ages and abilities in Duluth and the surrounding communities.

Lessons are geared to meeting the musical goals of each student, whether for pleasure, general music appreciation, or professional ambitions. Tuition includes weekly private lessons, group lessons, a variety of performing opportunities (formal recitals at the College of St. Scholastica and informal community performances at retirement centers), competition coaching, and parent-teacher consultations.

As a former homeschooler, I would be delighted to become a musical resource to the homeschool families. I would be more than happy to send additional materials concerning my credentials/educational background, studio policy, and fall schedule.

Paperwork from the Duluth School District

  If you're new to homeschooling and live in the Duluth, Minn., school district, you can call Karen Villeburn-Vranek at (218) 336-8710 to ask for one of these packets.

  A parent recently posted a question on the yahoo group duluthhomeed about the paperwork that is mailed to homeschooling parents. This being my sixth year filling out these forms, I got out my own packet and did my best to explain what it contains.
The yellow form — do this one!
  The yellow "Minnesota Compulsory Instruction Report" is filled out for each student. Homeschool parents in Minnesota are required to register students ages 7-16 in Minnesota. This is the main form, the one to register your students. It's also the one that I photocopy to show Barnes & Noble as so-called "proof" that I'm homeschooling. (All it proves is that I filled out a form, but it works to get the educators discount card.)
Report Card
  Homeschooling parents who do not have a four-year college degree are required by state law to submit quarterly report cards to the school district. They may choose to use the district's form, or some other form. I have never had this form included in the district's mailing before. I imagine they're being helpful, and that perhaps someone new put the packets together. Homeschooling parents who have a four-year degree (either parent, if both are teaching the children) do not have to submit report cards.
Testing
  The testing information included in the mailing mostly refers to homeschoolers who want their child to have a state diploma. I don't know much about that. The other testing info. is another attempt to be helpful, I think, but the list is very incomplete. State law requires homeschoolers to test annually with a nationally norm-referenced test in reading/language and math. I don't think it's required in science and social studies, which the district's letter says.
State Funds
  There is a form about state funds available to homeschoolers. The school district distributes this money, but it comes from the state. Some families decline this money for personal reasons. I have always submitted receipts for it, and never had a problem having my purchases accepted. It must be for books, workbooks, etc. (not classroom supplies) of a secular nature.
Family Census
  There is a "family census form" that families may choose to fill out to help the district assess how many children are in its district, so they can plan for the future. Or don't fill it out; it's not required.

Postage stamps used to teach history

After teaching 32 years in public high school and now working part time mentoring social studies teachers, I have developed lessons using stamps, postmarks and special artwork found on First Day Covers. Each CD, Warm Up/Review Lessons Using First Day Covers, contains thirty United States history lessons either pre or post 1877. By analyzing the First Day Cover images found in each lesson, students are "hooked" on the subject and by using their critical thinking skills can draw conclusions or delve further into the history and impact of the person, document or event. For the teacher, the lessons include questions, teacher notes and concluding activities.

Music Listening Contest

  Music Listening Contest – Registration Open (Statewide)
  The Minnesota High School Music Listening Contest is an annual competition that enriches students' experiences with classical, ethnic, and popular music in a fun and competitive environment. Teachers or coaches recruit three students to form a team. In the fall, students receive a 100-page Study Guide and three repertoire compact discs that contain all the musical selections they will need to compete effectively.
  All teams participate in regional competitions (based on geographical location) in January and first- and second-place teams advance to the state competition in February. Registration fee for each team is $90 ($30/student), which includes a Study Guide and 3 CDs per student and coach.
  The contest is open to all Minnesota high school students, 9-12th grade, from public schools, private schools, home schools, or music studios. If you are looking for a way to get your students involved in a meaningful, fun and competitive music history and listening activity, this is it.

Information nights for “Classical Conversations”

The following is information for homeschoolers, not sponsored by Northland CORE.

  Dear Minnesotan Home Schoolers,
  Classical Conversations is a national classical and Christian homeschooling program seeking to empower parents. I am helping CC start groups/communities all over Minnesota. Last year, I became involved with Classical Conversations in Maple Plain, Minn. I thought I was doing it for my children and for their future education. But quickly it became clear to me that Classical Conversations was in the business of helping me weekly to redeem my own education so that I could do the hard but rewarding work of teaching my children myself.
  Classical Conversations meets once a week, providing weekly accountability, encouragement and structure that supplement and support what is being taught at home.
  On a weekly basis, we offer Foundations, Essentials and Challenge programs in local communities.
Foundations
  Foundations is for ages 4-12. We meet weekly for 24 weeks each year. We work on memory work in history, math, Latin, English grammar, science and geography. We also do science experiments and fine arts projects together as well as lunch and oral presentations. Students are placed in classes of eight students with a paid tutor who is also a homeschooling mom.
Essentials
  Essentials is for 4th-6th graders. We meet in the afternoon after Foundations from 1:15-3:15. We spend 45 minutes on intensive English grammar, 30 minutes on a “Math Slam” competition and 45 minutes on Institute for Excellence in Writing assignments. The kids love it, and the parents have been delighted with the boost that Essentials provides to their children’s academics.
Challenge
  Challenge is for 7th-12th graders. Students meet with a tutor weekly for 30 weeks each year to study core subjects such as literature, history, science with labs, math, logic, debate, theology, geography and two foreign languages. Emphasis during class time is on discussion, presentation and lab work with students taking responsibility for additional research, reading and assignments throughout the week.
  There are 5 Classical Conversations groups/communities in Minnesota. But with the Lord’s help and blessing, I’d like to share with Minnesota what CC has to offer. I’d like to offer a free 3-day logic practicum and to present our weekly programs in information meetings in your area. I will be in the Virginia and Duluth area on Thursday June 11. Sell it, baby!

  Quick, in ten words or less, explain why you homeschool.
  It happens so often - a casual exchange turns suddenly to the topic of home/unschooling, and we’re asked to defend our lifestyle on the spot, succinctly, in the produce aisle, at the intersection, or with a mouthful of dentist’s tools.
  It’s an impossible challenge. The reasons are just too many. I could talk all day about the racism and gender discrimination I’ve observed in schools, the hyper competitiveness, the emphasis on external motivation, the grading and ranking and judging, the destruction of innate curiosity, the stripping away of personal responsibility, the fear-based policymaking, the repression of individuality and the pressure to conform within a culture of consumerism.
  But there’s no time for all that. So, my new ‘ten words or less’ is simply this:
  Our values are not represented within the public school system.
  And, since this is not the produce aisle but my blog where I’m free to rant and ramble for as long as I want, I get to expound with a good example. This is from a friend in Montclair whose daughter attends Rand, the elementary school where Lucia endured kindergarten:
  “Also, tell me if this strikes you as odd or if I am just being a knee-jerk, anti-culture freak: Lily's next book project is to read a fairy tale or fable and then design a CEREAL BOX about it. It is to have character "ingredients" on the side and a special name (ie; "Cinderella Flakes").
  They are to design front of box as an ad. The back of box is to have the details of the story (and I quote: "Remember, you are SELLING the cereal"). Way to go, Rand, twisting and trivializing a literary genre.”
  Yes, this does indeed strike me as odd. How does selling cereal have anything at all to do with the study of literature? This assignment is in direct opposition to several of our family’s values.
  Value #1: Literature is an innately valuable and worthwhile pursuit.
  This assignment detracts from the innate artistic value of the literary piece by reducing it to a vehicle for merchandising and commercial gain. It encourages the children to read the story through the lens of its potential advertising value rather than for personal enjoyment or appreciation of language, plot, imagery, or historical context.
  Value #2: It is my responsibility as a parent to protect my child from corporate marketing.
  This assignment condones aggressive and manipulative marketing and encourages children to accept and respond to it. In an age where powerful corporations are constantly and insidiously targeting our children as consumers-in-training, shouldn’t teachers strive to create an advertising-free haven in the classroom? According to Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood, “companies spend $17 billion annually marketing to children, a staggering increase from the $100 million spent in 1983” and “Children ages 2-11 see more than 25,000 advertisements a year on TV alone.”
  Value #3: Food is for nourishment.
  The assignment reinforces the dangerous view that foods should be purchased not for their nutritional value and wholesome ingredients but for their marketing appeal. The cereal box is obviously meant to be modeled on the kind of sugar cereals marketed so heavily and specifically at children with the use of cartoon characters, prizes, and other manipulative devices. Unless their parents are buying whole grain, high-fiber, low-sugar cereals, (and I’m sure that for many children in the class this is not the case) then a serving of “breakfast cereal” for children can contain as much sugar as a glazed doughnut. Some cereals such as Kellogg’s Honey Smacks and Post’s Golden Crisps are more than 50% sugar by weight. Froot Loops, Corn Pops, Rice Krispies, Cocoa Krispies, and Apple Jacks contain 12 grams of sugar, only one gram of fiber and 135-200 milligrams of sodium in a 3/4 cup serving. With the rates of childhood obesity and type 2 diabetes on the rise, do we really want these kinds of products making an appearance in the curriculum?
  The teacher who came up with this assignment is not a bad person. I’m sure she was just looking for a fun and engaging project. But because her values are so different from ours, or maybe just because she was not thoughtful in her choices, she overlooked the negative messages communicated by this assignment. There are so many wonderful and creative ways to help children engage with literature. Why cheapen, toxify, and commercialize the experience?
  Of course it can be argued that these sorts of experiences are a good way to develop a critical eye and awareness of manipulative marketing techniques. And yes, it’s good for kids to learn to navigate the many different aspects of culture, both positive and negative, that they’ll encounter in “the real world.” But I don’t think that was really the aim of this assignment. And for a family like ours, whose values so often clash with the mainstream culture, school would become one exercise in critical awareness after another. As unschoolers, we learn to navigate the real world in the real world.
  Someone once told me that she found the homeschooling families in her community really annoying. “Like their kids can’t go to school like everybody else because they’re just so different and special!” she said.
  Well, yeah, aren't yours?
  In ten words or less,
  Our values are not represented within the public school system.
  If you really feel that yours are, then I guess you have nothing to worry about.

Conference delivers energy and fresh ideas

  I spent this last Saturday at the Northland C.O.R.E. homeschool conference. To be honest, my heart was not in attending because I had multiple commitments both on Friday and on Sunday. I like it when my life looks like it has some control. This last weekend looked as though it was going to be one in which I ricocheted from one commitment to the next.
  But, off to the conference I went. I chose to go because I am deeply grateful to the committee who made it happen. I've been involved in many aspects of Northland C.O.R.E. over our 14+ years of homeschooling. I know much of the work involved, and I certainly know of the rewards of being involved. Our family has directly benefited, over and over, from our involvement with C.O.R.E.
  The team who made this conference happen is totally volunteer. They do what they do because they are committed to the cause of home education, especially in our area. We all have free choice as to how we spend our time, and they chose to give their time open-handedly to us. How can we not be grateful?
  So, I arrived at the conference, and entered the swarm of homeschoolers who were registering, greeting each other as old friends they hadn't seen in ages (which was truly the case for me), looking over the helpful packet we received, and setting off to shop or attend workshops.
  It wasn't long before I could feel something deep inside me relax, and I knew I had made a good decision to come. As I told Sara, "I didn't even know I needed this till I got here."
  So, what was it that I needed that I wasn't aware of?
  First, I needed a day to myself to absorb information and encouragement to keep me going every day. We all need a fresh idea once in a while, and especially in the spring when cabin fever hits in MN. I learned some tricks that I will use before this school year is over.
  Next, I needed to be in the company of people who think homeschooling is "normal." We all know we have the legal right, the desire and the call to homeschool. But not everyone in our lives agree. To be with others who have set aside other pursuits to invest themselves in their children's success in school and life is very encouraging and stimulating. There are so many different approaches to home education, and we had a good sampling there. But, the kindred spirit of being on the same page in this choice, in the same building, at the same time, was priceless.
  And last, I needed to make personal connections with friends. While I am in a local support group that we really enjoy, I also have dear homeschooling friends who are scattered throughout this region. I don't get to see them nearly often enough. Our common bond of homeschooling made it a good bet that if I went to the conference, I would see them and be able to catch up with them and their families. I was not disappointed. And I enjoyed myself immensely. I was also surprised by making a new friend in Lois Walfrid Johnson, as well as her husband. They were incredibly affirming of homeschooling, and I flat-out basked in their approval of our choice to homeschool.
  I found great deals on books. I gleaned some great ideas and information on how to change up our home school to make it even more rewarding. I collected some impressions that will be food for thought and consideration that I will revisit for a long time to come. My day made me feel like I had taken a big sigh of contentment. I am refreshed and ready to go.
  Mark Twain said, "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do..." I am so glad that I will not have to hear how great the conference was last Saturday, and be disappointed that I didn't go. It was worthy of my setting aside other things to attend. And the things I set aside to go are still there, awaiting my attention. But now I can approach them as an energized, encouraged person! Not a bad way to start a Monday!

January 2009 Note from the CORE-dinator

  This afternoon was a bit trying. We went to Homeschool Ski Mondays at Spirit Mountain. The kids had a terrific time and came home happy and exhausted. Because I didn’t want to miss any “important” school work, I pushed the envelope and spent the next two hours trying to do some math and reading with four of them. It was dismal. Each of them was too physically tired to focus. I was worn out and driven by duty instead of joy. I don’t think anybody learned anything in the two hours we spent. Dinner was late, and I had a Northland CORE meeting to go to. By 6 p.m., I was depleted.
  I arrived at the CORE meeting thinking I wouldn’t contribute much. Here’s where the surprise of my day came in. As five of us sat around making plans for the conference, I could feel my energy level rising. How encouraging to talk and laugh with people who understood what my day was like. What fun it was to bounce ideas off of each other. It was revitalizing to work together in thinking of the things you would enjoy at a home educator’s conference. I left my Northland CORE friends looking forward to my spring instead of feeling burdened by the load.

History of Northland CORE

  In about 1998, local homeschooling parents of different educational philosophies got together and were brainstorming ways to connect the homeschooling community in the Twin Ports and surrounding area.
  At that time, Northland CORE was formed. The founders of Northland CORE wanted to give local homeschoolers some hands-on, helpful information and began publishing a bi-monthly newsletter, which included articles from national home educators and listings of different events open and available to homeschoolers.
  Then CORE began to sponsor its own events, including Parents' Night Out, homeschool information nights, an annual Home Educators' Conference and an annual Experts' Night for the students.

What CORE is:
  A group of parents who are passionate about educating and rearing children in a positive way. We are committed to reaching out to other home educators with resources and opportunities so that we all can make the best of this journey.

What CORE is not:
* A support group. We do have a support group liaison and keep tabs on the goals and events of local support groups.
* A governmental liaison. We do stay abreast of what local school districts require of home educators and make that information available to local home schoolers.
* Expert Home Educators. We are a group of people who are homeschooling our own children, some of us for many years, some of us for only a few.

Circling the family wagons for the middle school years

  We’re about to embark on our first full year of homeschooling. I’ve had one or the other of my three boys — now ages 10, 12 and 20 — at home for various periods of time during our public school career. But this year, as my friend who moved deep into the woods to live off the land once said to me, “we are pulling the pin.” Leaving it all behind. Going out on our own. Into the wilderness with good intentions, a library card, some recommended reading, the company of a few other homeschooling families, and faith in natural inquisitiveness of the human brain.
  Perhaps this is an odd place to begin a homeschooling career, here on the precipice of adolescence. Right at a time of intense socialization, it might be argued, I’m drawing them back into the family circle. Am I a mother who can’t bear to see her boys go? Am I hanging on to the last years of childhood as if it were a bit of a life raft? Am I over protective?
  In all honestly, that might be so. I don’t understand people who tell me they’re looking forward to the kids moving out. My 20-year-old moved to Montana and doesn’t come home but twice a year, and I hate it. I know he’s out there having a blast and building a life for himself, yet I would much rather he live here in town, where he can come home for dinner and do his laundry. So yeah, I am wringing out each moment of time I have left with boys in my house. I admit it.
  The reality is that I can’t face the prospect of middle school. Having sent one kid through the system, I can’t face standing back again to watch my boys walk through that miserable American rite of passage. Middle school, in my opinion, is its own special hell — for the whole family. The pheromones, the brain development issues, the societal pressures, coupled with the shameful teacher-student ratios, the bomb threats and ensuing student screenings at the school doors, and the school hours that contradict all we know about the natural sleep patterns of young teens — it all adds up to a great big mud pit of ugliness. I hated it when I was that age. My son who is now 20 hated it. Nearly everyone I know hated it. Why would I send my kids off to that, every day, for three years? And why would I bring it on myself, waiting each day for the miserable children to get off the bus, and then deal with the hours of homework torture and decompression?
  When I went to check out the middle schools, one administrator told me that while they value parent volunteers in the school, they try to give the kids space by placing the parent in a position where they aren’t in the same room as their child. “The kids don’t really like being around their parents at this age,” she informed me. “Humm,” I thought. “He doesn’t really like doing writing projects, either. How come that doesn’t count around here?”
  Middle school is a big vortex of institutionalized distancing. I’ve been thinking about it, reading about it, talking about it, and I have come to this conclusion: I can do a better job. I have either courageously or naively assumed that there’s got to be a better way to usher these humans in my care from childhood to adulthood than the one our culture has created.
  So off we go, into the wilderness of adolescence and homeschooling. I expect it will be a bumpy ride. I’ll send a postcard now and then.

  My Fellow Homeschoolers,
  I spent my summer trying to make things better, refining homeschool decisions to make learning better, painting my kitchen a better color, planting more flowers so my yard looks better, and reading some challenging books so my mind works better. Trying to make my world a better place is probably a human characteristic (and maybe what got Eve in trouble).
  As summer nears its end, I am also thinking about how to make next year’s homeschool community better. One change we at Northland CORE are going to make (thanks to Lori Lindgren) is to beef up our Homeschool Parents’ Night Out. Another thing we are eyeing is the local homeschool conference we host next spring. This is actually the time of year when we need to be getting ideas about speakers, workshops, themes, and logistics.
  With that in mind, I invite you to get involved. At the lowest level we would love to hear suggestions regarding what you would like to see at next spring’s conference. What kind of workshops would help you with your homeschool journey? What do you struggle with the most? What is the “hole” you need filled with some expert information? Have you heard any great homeschool oriented speakers whom you think would benefit our homeschool community? Please take a few minutes and let us know via our website (northlandcore.org). We value all suggestions, comments and questions.
At the highest level we would love to have some help! Northland CORE needs idea people, organizers, behind-the-scenes people, up-front people, people to distribute chocolate to the downhearted ... we just need some people! Again, if you are interested contact us at northlandcore.org.
  I know, I know, you don’t feel like thinking yet about next year’s schooling. You are feeling guilty about not pursuing summer school with your children. You are trying to find your counter under all the old worksheets. Please take some time to help us dream a little bit and work to make homeschooling in the Northland something in which we take pleasure.

March 2008 Note from the CORE-dinator

  I know what your house looks like. You’ve got papers and books on the kitchen counters. There are seed plants on the windowsill and that magnet experiment on the piano. Legos have convened in the living room corner and some have evolved into a beautiful Lego starship. There’s a fort in the dining room made from chairs, umbrellas and bedspreads, and you still have to put away that basket of laundry on the couch.
  Don’t be ashamed. You homeschool your children. You are busy all day taking things off shelves and out of drawers ... all the better to learn with. You are also making, eating and cleaning up after meals three times a day. Some of you have paying jobs outside your home. Schooling, living and working simply can’t contain "cleaning" on most days.
  But let me throw out this challenge to you. Call off school for a day or two and get your children to help you go through all your school books and papers. Make a pile of children’s papers to save and put them in a file folder. Make a realistic pile of books and workbooks you think you might use in the future and put them on the shelf. Then get out a huge box and make a very big pile of books and curriculum you know you are never going to use. That art program that promised full exposure but only turned out to be modified coloring books? ... put it in the box. That fabulous foreign language course you never got around to and truly know you never will? ... put it in the box. That 14th pair of scissors and 8th box of watercolors? ... put them in the box.
  Don’t call it "cleaning"; kids get edgy when you say that. Instead tell them that you’re going to sell some of their school stuff. Maybe even offer them some kind of percentage (homeschool math) and call it Project Day. Kids love going through their old papers. They love to see how much progress they’ve accomplished. If you don’t get overly controlling you might even find yourselves laughing and enjoying each other’s company! I guarantee that you and your children will be happier after you organize, clear off and get rid of the excess.
  Why am I nagging you like this? Because on Saturday, March 15th Northland CORE will be sponsoring our annual Used Book/Curriculum Sale at Hermantown Community Church from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. This year you don’t even have to pay to get a table ... just call or email Robyn Schow (robyns@charter.net) to register and then show up with your stuff.
  Higher Grounds Coffee will have a stand in the lobby of the church so you can purchase beverages and treats. Also, Northland CORE will be setting up conversation and information tables so we all can do a little networking.
  Because of MACHE coming to Duluth this year, our Used Book Sale is the only local homeschool event Northland CORE is sponsoring this year. Please come. We want to see you there!

My Fellow Homeschoolers —
  A caring friend and I were talking during one of these ever popular homeschool social events.
  “You look tired,” she said to me.
  “Oh, off-white is just a bad color for me,” I said.
  “No. You look tired,” she decided.
  She didn’t offend me. I knew she was being honest (never devalue honesty), and I listen when somebody speaks honestly even though it goes against conventional niceties.
  Although I spent the next three hours dancing and playing with my children (devoted, self-sacrificing homeschool mother that I am), I went home and collapsed into a chair. “Isn’t Arthur on?” I baited the children. Soothing cup of hot cocoa in hand, I dozed off for a luxurious three minutes but woke up shivering. What was wrong with me? I had a list of tasks to accomplish, but I was bone weary, cold and unmotivated.
  All of the sudden I remembered that I forgotten to eat that day. Oh, I had quickly gobbled up an old piece of coffeecake while emptying the dishwasher, eaten a handful of Cheerios when I was cleaning up the kitchen and had a bite of re-heated garlic noodles as I was getting lunch. But there was nothing other than quick-burning carbohydrates in my system.
  I forced myself to cook up some vegetables. Just moments after eating, I could almost feel my depleted storehouses filling up. For the last hour I had been short-tempered, impatient, selfish and downright mean with my children simply because my unfueled body couldn’t cope with the stress I was putting on it.
  Sometimes as parents, we tend to glorify self-sacrifice, but that sacrifice isn’t limited to us. For example, I make sure that we have a lot of fruits and vegetables in our house so that my children can eat their “five a day.” But on most days I do not eat my five fruits and veggies — I’m saving them for the children, they cost a lot, too much time ... you know the excuses. But I can see that when I’m not healthy, I also am not a very gracious, loving mother.
  Our homeschool mom’s group met one evening to discuss the topic of consistency. One wise mother brought up the fact that it is much easier to be a consistent parent when you are a rested, nourished parent. This is such a simple, attainable fact.
  How silly we parents are sometimes. We spend enormous amounts of time, energy and resources to ensure our children are well cared for. Yet the most important tool in their development is a loving , caring parent! And if I am dull, grouchy and exhausted, how can I expect to be much use?
  I challenge you to put self-care on one of the top rungs of your priority ladder. Taking care of yourself and your most important relationships isn’t selfish.
  Our Parents’ Night Out this month will focus on just that topic. Please join us at Barnes and Noble on January 14 at 7 p.m. in the Children’s Area as Lori Lindgren encourages us to sharpen each other toward being emotionally and physically healthier in 2008.

My Fellow Homeschoolers —
  I lost my focus in the middle of the dance floor, practicing my jerky waltz step. The air was hot and muggy. I’d had a long day on my feet and couldn’t keep my mind on the dance steps. Frankly, my mental and physical predilections were weak and floppy. I had a quick thought of how nice it would have been just to sit on the couch and watch TV tonight instead of going to ballroom dance class with my husband.
  Just as quickly, shame chided me. My husband took initiative to set up and pay for these classes. He wanted to be challenged. He wanted to work on something together. Relationship doesn’t happen unless you spend time together experiencing something; watching TV together barely qualifies. It is the path of least resistance, least challenge and the smallest reward.
  In this hazy, lazy month of August I sometimes feel about homeschooling as I do about dance class. The preparation for homeschooling is so exciting. I love looking through catalogs; mentally trying out ideas about different books and activities. I fantasize over learning together with my kids. I celebrate the day the UPS man delivers our stuff. It’s a little bit like signing up for ballroom dance classes and dreaming about beautiful dresses, elegant tuxedos and dance halls filled with graceful couples — me being half of one of them.
  What I neglect to think about at that point though is how much work and practice it takes to get “1, 2, 3; 1, 2, 3; 1,2,3” movements down with my feet. It doesn’t just happen. I can’t just take my partner’s hand, glide out to the middle of the floor and begin waltzing. I have to forcibly give myself to mental concentration in order to focus on the work at foot. I have to constantly remind myself to listen carefully to the rhythm of the music. Instead of letting my imagination go blowing around, I have to be aware of my arms and legs. My eyes want to watch the other dancing couples, but they need to be looking into the eyes of my partner in order to pay attention to and respond appropriately to his signals. This takes a lot of discipline and strength, and it’s not just about me! If I let my mind and body do what they want to do, I would sitting on a couch, numbly taking in what the TV feeds me.
  So goes homeschooling. Am I forcibly giving myself to mental concentration in order to focus on the work at hand? I have to constantly remind myself to listen carefully to the rhythm of my home. Instead of letting my imagination go blowing around I have to fully attend to my planned and unplanned activities. My eyes want to watch what other homeschooling families are doing, but they need to be looking into the eyes of my little scholars in order to respond appropriately to their signals. This takes a lot of discipline and strength, and it’s not just about me!
  There is little reward in passivity. If we want to enjoy this time learning together as a family we need to jump in with eyes wide open: understanding this homeschooling endeavor will take a lot of time, effort and sacrifice. But it is this effort that enables us to glide across the floor in a graceful swirl and rhythm of learning — metaphorically speaking, of course. Are you ready? I’ll start the music!

My Fellow Homeschoolers —
  It's November now. You've jumped into the school year with both feet and established your homeschooling routine. You've spent the last couple of months persistently following an educational plan, and your children are thriving under your guidance. Your children are enjoying learning at home, and you are comfortable in your role as both parent and instructor. Strangers raise their eyebrows when you tell them you homeschool. You simply give a very assuring smile and say, "Oh, we just love learning together!"
  Whoops! Did you just choke on your coffee? What do you mean you don't have it all together? What do you mean your home doesn't resemble the cover of Home Education Magazine? Hey, wasn't that you that I saw hustling your children into the mini-van with an exasperated tone and the ol' elbow grip on your 6-year-old slowpoke? Of course it was. That is each one of us. When you are sitting on your deck in August reviewing homeschool magazines and books, the home-education world looks idyllic. In theory, it is idyllic. Birds are singing, sun is shining, dinner is a simple salad, kids are out investigating the natural world, ("Hey, Mom, look at how this ostrich fern is developing reproductive spores. I can't wait to study botany!!") But the reality is that homeschooling bears a strong resemblance to a challenging full-time job ... without the salary. When you are dragging yourself out of bed on dark, October mornings, slogging through a very dirty house, breaking up sibling fights frequently and trying to make learning exciting hour after hour after hour ... home education kind of loses its luster.
  Here's permission to cut yourself some slack. Your home shouldn't resemble a Home & Garden magazine cover. If it does, that means there are no children in the house. You aren't going to look like the smiling cover of Oprah. Those are two-dimensional, airbrushed, static pictures. You are three-dimensional and maturing-in a good way! Children can't be well behaved all the time. We all learn about life by making mistakes; sometimes this looks like bad behavior. Your children will not be excited about every learning opportunity you give them. They are unique spirits, and the best you can do is expose them to developing ideas and help them wrap their minds around them.
  Although the natural season is autumn, you are in the fruitful, seed-dropping, spore-floating spring season of rearing children. Spring is messy. Creation, Life and Learning are messy. Don't try to tidy up and squash the growth!

My Fellow Homeschoolers —
  My neighbor brought over a few garden cucumbers last night.
  She asked if I have any good zucchini recipes because she has a lot of those too. This is her first garden and although she is pleased with the cucumbers and zucchini, she was disappointed with her tomatoes, beans and peas. She planted the tomatoes late from seeds. Now she knows they won't produce any fruit until after our first frost (for those of you who don't garden that translates into - no tomatoes). Not understanding the seed packets, she bought traditional peas when she wanted the kind with the edible pod. Again, not understanding the seed packets, she bought brown beans, not regular string green beans. We were laughing over her foibles but were agreed on the fact that gardening is something you have to learn through trial and error. No matter how many books you read, no matter how many people you ask, no matter how many seeds and plants you buy, you won't know your soil and garden until after the mistakes have been made. It takes more than one season to produce the garden you fantasize over. Do you know where I'm going with this?
  Homeschooling works in a similar fashion. You pour through a bunch of catalogs, spend a bunch of money, ask for advice from seasoned homeschoolers and buy the "perfect" reading curriculum. Nine months later you realize that not only did that curriculum not work, but your daughter has a reading disability which will demand an entirely new direction with your teaching. You drop a couple hundred dollars on the best music classes money can buy. After a few frustrating evenings you discover that your son actually is tone deaf but has a fantastic skill in charcoal drawing. And one day when you happen to glance at your child you realize there's a bloom! He's doing long division. He's finally spelling without asking you how to spell every single word. He's helping his little sister with an attitude of kindness.
  You can fantasize about the perfect, blooming, green, productive garden (or happy, grateful, wildly intelligent homeschooled children in this example). But it takes months of getting dirt under your nails by weeding, watering, observing, pinching off nonessential shoots and simply maintaining before the results please you. And there are always surprises ... like who planted that passion for spiders?
